Working in the gaming industry, I field questions daily from people interested in what we do and how they can get a foot in the door. Without question, the most common question is, “How can I get a job in gaming?”
First off, a career in gaming is a great way to earn a living. We deal in fun and our workplace reflects that. It’s also a great way to develop new skills, challenge your beliefs, and stay on top of the latest developments in the world of technology.
We thought it would be great to share some advice for those of you who want to pursue a career in the gaming industry. Fear not! The advice shared below will likely open your eyes to the surprising accessibility of the gaming world.
It’s important to understand that all gaming companies, at their core, are businesses. As such, they need people from all walks of life with a wide variety of skills. Gaming companies have payroll to meet, finances to monitor, employees to manage, and customers to take care of. Contrary to popular believe, a gaming career does not equate to playing games all day nor does it mean you have to know how to make games.
At Big Fish Games, our game developers make up a small portion of our staff. You might be surprised to know that while everyone has a hand in bringing our games to market, it’s only a handful of people that create the art and craft the gameplay you’ll find in our Mystery Case Files, Drawn, and Hidden Expedition games.
To the occasional visitor, it’s easy to see the Razor scooters buzzing around the office, the Friday afternoon Nerf gun battles, or our two gaming lounges and think a career in gaming is all play and no work. The truth is we work hard so we can play hard. Don’t think for a minute the artists, engineers, developers, writers, and other staff members that make it possible for you to enjoy A New Game Every Day don’t take their jobs very seriously.
So, what does it take to begin a career in gaming? At Big Fish Games, we believe everyone deserves to have fun. If you want to be part of our team, you have to posses the passion, focus, and integrity to deliver on that tenet every day. As a game company we are hard working and thrive on solving the complicated problems we encounter every day.
