Did you have a good Valentine’s Day? February is most often known as a month for love, but 2013 also made it a steamy month for mobile gaming. From new titles that invigorate old franchises and games that take you to a galaxy far, far away, it can be difficult to decide which titles to get and which to pass. Here’s a list of the top five iPhone games for February 2013 to help you out!
This gem from Disney Mobile Studios snuck in at the last minute, as it was released on February 28. As this trailer clearly showcases, the game offers a nice way to head into March with some family fun, featuring favorite characters like Buzz Lightyear and Woody.
Toy Story Smash It! will also sate your appetite for destruction, as it lets players demolish structures with a bouncy ball and wipe out those pesky aliens. The cartoon graphics are both stylish and sensible (it is a Toy Story game, after all!), and it’s hard to get tired of all those “SMASH,” “BOOM” and “OW” noises. The game also received favorable mention from industry critics, who commended it for providing an accessible experience for both new and advanced players.
“While completion may be brief and easy for experienced players, aiming to notch a perfect score provides sufficient challenge and shows just how clever the puzzles really are,” wrote Mac Life contributor Steve Watts.
It’s tough to beat a classic, but what do you get when you combine an iconic arcade game with one of the most recognized movie franchises in history? You get Star Wars Pinball, of course! Released on February 26 by Zen Studios, Star Wars Pinball is available on iOS, as well as PC.
Three unique pinball tables are available, with more planned for release in the future. Destructoid noted that the game seemed simple at first, but became surprisingly intricate throughout playing. In addition to standard pinball, the title features a mini-game that puts players in first-person mode and in control of Luke Skywalker. We’ve heard of pinball wizards, but how about pinball Jedi?
Year Walk is difficult to describe. It’s a Puzzle Game at its core, but includes elements of mystery, adventure and searching for hidden objects. Released February 21 Simogo Handelsbolag, Year Walk is set in the forests of 19th century Sweden. A Modojo review commended the game for its emphasis on exploration and for putting the player on the hunt for clues.
This, combined with surreal imagery and challenging puzzles, makes it a gaming experience you’ll not soon forget. It is rated 12 and older for mild violence, so it may not be the game of choice for the squeamish, but it is a strong title for those who thirst for exploration.
“So Year Walk is much more than a single riddle, wrapped in a single, mysterious enigma,” wrote Modojo contributor John Bedford. “It’s an intricately blended experience of puzzles and exploration, with seemingly forgotten clues returning to the surface later on.”
What would a list of February games be without a title about love? Be Together is all about connecting lovebirds (or in this case, loveblobs). The goal of this cute title is to get its enamored main characters together. Just like it does in real life, finding love in Be Together takes a lot of work!
Players must use a wide range of objects and tools to help Maya and Ruby make it into each other’s arms unharmed. There are a total of three worlds, each with a unique theme and 20 levels, giving gamers a combined total of 60 levels to play through. A Modojo article criticized it for a lack of originality, but noted that Physics Puzzle Game lovers are likely to “be enamored.”
Platform Games are a mixture of fun and frustration, depending on how your video game jumping skills are. Cordy 2 goes back to the classics, and an Apple’N'Apps review suggested it may be the iPhone’s first “top-notch” entry to the genre. Released by SilverTree on February 7, the game offers the first four levels for free. While you do have to pay to access the entire portfolio of 48 stages, it may be worth the investment with diverging paths and hidden collectibles to find.
Each level has a three-star scoring system, so players looking for an additional challenge can shoot for perfection. There are also 18 bonus levels available for those that want to put their platforming skills to the test.
“There’s always a new challenge whether you’re running, jumping, flying, swinging, smashing, or moving upside down, and you never know what’s coming next,” wrote Apple’N'Apps contributor Trevor Sheridan.
