Best Things to Drink While Gaming

gaming drinks bubbleteaYou’ve got a long night of gaming ahead of you, so you’ve created a checklist to prepare you for the long haul.

1. Replace batteries in mouse and keyboard. Check.
2. Take Lucky out for a walk. Check.
3. Turn cellphone to silent. Check.
4. Food and drinks within arm’s reach. Uhhh.

Every gamer needs to be properly fueled for a night of gaming. After all, it’ll get pretty tough to spot a bunch of hidden objects when your eyes are glazed over with images of Slurpees and soda.

Although we usually think about choosing a beverage based on pure deliciousness, you might be surprised to learn that some drinks could actually improve your gaming mojo.

Here’s a list of some of the best drinks to enhance your gaming experience. Cheers!

Alright, so it isn’t the extremely caffeinated drink of the stereotypical latenight gamer, but it still packs a decent enough punch. Besides, a constant energy rush probably isn’t the best thing to do to your body. Tea provides a nice alternative for those who’d prefer not to go into an energy drink-induced delirium (you know, where one minute you’re trying to lift a curse, and the next the Cypress Witch is emerging through your monitor Ring-style).

Also, tea is versatile! If you need to relax over a light-hearted adventure game, the gentle flavor of vanilla can soothe your taste buds while you meander through a variety of virtual worlds. If you need to be a little more energized to deal with demanding customers while on the clock, go for piquant pomegranate and get your game on.

Tea might even help you get through those challenging puzzle or Match 3 games! According to research published on GreenMedInfo, people who basked in the aroma of peppermint experienced improved memory and alertness. So, if anyone makes fun of your choice of gaming drink, just remind them it gives you cognitive super powers!

Need something a little stronger than tea without sacrificing versatility? Java can give you a good kickstart with anywhere from 95 to 200 mg of caffeine per 8 oz of generic brewed coffee, according to the Mayo Clinic. For those relaxing Hidden Object game-filled evenings, we recommend adding a little milk to soften the taste. For late night gaming adventures, on the other hand, you can definitely go with a pure medium or dark roast.
You’ve got a wide variety of flavored coffee syrups to pack your mug with extra flavor, too. You can choose from delicious options like almond, amaretto, hazelnut, and chocolate chip cookie (no that’s not a mistake, coffee syrup really does come in cookie flavor!).

If you’ve already explored and conquered the most caffeinated of the traditional coffees, we suggest trying Turkish-brewed coffee (AKA mud coffee). Although we can’t suggest Turkish coffee for consumption by amateurs due to an absurdly high level of caffeine, it’s one of the strongest types of coffee out there. If the caffeine doesn’t wake you up, the taste probably will!

And don’t let anyone tell you that you drink too much of this classic pick-me-up. A Harvard study found there were no signs that drinking coffee led to an increased risk of death for the general population. Hooray coffee!

With all the buzz about long-lasting energy drinks and caffeine-driven, all-night gaming sessions, it’s easy to forget the simpler things in life. Sugar from fruit juice offers a respectable boost of energy without the unpleasant crash afterwards. Fruit juices make good hydrators as well, so this option has double the benefits if you’re planning an intense gaming session.

Why mango, you might ask? Well mango is good for just about any occasion, and it can also be used to make a fine martini, if you’re in the mood for some adult beverages. Other citrusy fruit juices go great with mango too, so you can transform your evening into a fun-filled exploration of fruit cocktails. Bonus points if you’re sipping your pineapple-mango concoction while playing a game set on a tropical island.

We’ll admit this one doesn’t break any new boundaries, but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. One of the big bonuses to soft drinks is easy access and no setup time. Need a drink? Just grab one out of the fridge and you’re good to go. No brewing time and no extra dishes.

You’ve also got a pretty big range of flavors and caffeine content. Mountain Dew tops the caffeine charts with 46-55 mg per 12 ounces, according to the Mayo Clinic. Pepsi and Coca-Cola aren’t too far behind if you’re not really into the Dew. And Sprite, 7UP and A&W Root Beer offer caffeine-free, carbonated refreshments.

Unlike some of the other options, drinking too much soda can be detrimental to your health, though, so don’t overdo it.

Sure, water is the most basic option, but it’s readily available, free and it’s good for you! Although it’s possible to drink too much of anything, it’s a lot harder to do that with water, so it’s a good option if you tend to drink a lot while you play. It’s also a great option for those especially hot days when you’re playing games inside to take advantage of the a/c. Keeping hydrated is also a good idea during the dog days of summer, and nothing can beat water there. If you need your game accompaniment to have a little flavor, drop in a bit of lemon or other fruit juice to keep your taste buds happy too.

We can’t possibly cover every combination of flavor and drink out there, so we’ll leave some of that up to you. What are some of your favorite video gaming beverages? Do you have one go-to drink or do you like to mix things up between gaming sessions?
